The first time I heard Sammy Hagar was on MTV. His video for “I Can’t Drive 55” was in high rotation in the summer of 1984, back when MTV showed videos. The video was full of driving antics, rebellion, and some downright good guitar playing.
I was surprised the next year when he would go on to be the new lead singer of Van Halen. Not only that, but 5150 played better than the previous Halen effort, 1984. The footage from Live without a Net, a concert film featuring the new Van Hagar group, is legendary.
In 1998, I was so excited to learn that Gary Cherone, formerly of Extreme, was to be the third singer for Van Halen. Van Halen III is one of my favorite records by the group. I can’t figure out why it wasn’t better received. The Van Halen III tour that summer was nothing short of incredible.
I support all Halen incarnations. I haven’t heard the latest version with a reunited David Lee Roth. The single is good. It seems like it would be a good record. It’s on my list.
What does this have to do with storms? Absolutely nothing. Well…maybe not. Now that I think about it, every Van Halen record is a storm of guitar awesomeness.
There was a storm here the other night and I had every intention of writing about low pressure systems. The 55th blog entry made me think of Sammy. Sammy made me think or Gary. Gary made me think of Diamond Dave.
Consciousness is, indeed, a stream.
