On most mornings, I eat a plain bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. I also have a side of scrambled egg whites. This, I am told, is a healthy way to start the day.
As I write this, and take short breaks by slurping spoonfuls of oat porridge mush, I wonder why it’s considered healthy.
From personal experience, although oatmeal tastes bland, my mornings feel more sustainable and energetic. When I’ve eaten fast food breakfasts, I’ve felt very full for a bit and then hungry again an hour or so later.
Oatmeal is high specific in micro-nutrients. Vitamin B1 helps with neurotransmission (or, rather, it helps one think better). Iron is essential to having a healthy blood supply. Its high fiber reduces unhealthy cholesterol levels, too.
On Sunday mornings, when I make biscuits, I notice a distinct “blah” feeling after that homey “mmm” taste that scratch biscuits deliver. Oatmeal has a “meh” taste. For me though, it follows with a “yay” sensation that carries over into my morning activities.
Over the past 38 days, I’ve come to respect the oat. It seems like a good breakfast food.
