Mondays have a bad rap. I guess it’s because, for most, Monday marks the beginning of a new work week.
I like Mondays. Next to Sunday, it’s my favorite day of the week. For me, Monday is a day of rejuvenation, re-commitment to purpose, and a general “let’s get fired up about the week” kind of day.
Because most musicians tour and perform on weekends, I rarely have any studio clients on Monday. I guess most are observing some kind of day off. Being so, Monday is the day I review my calendar for the week, confirm bookings, keep up with paper work, and perform general maintenance. If there’s time, I may get some personal writing, recording, or mixing done.
Yesterday was an unusual Monday. I got to the gym at 5 as planned. Had breakfast with Holly at 6:00 a.m. Got Ivy up at 6:30 a.m.
As I gave Ivy her morning milk, I smelled something funny. Not Mel Brooks funny, but funny funny. Ivy had vomited. Smitty sprung into action and secured the scene.
I cleaned Ivy up but noticed that her breath was inordinately stinky. She also had green goop oozing out of both eyes. I cleaned her up as best I could. Goopy eyes and stinky breath made daycare a non-option. I called the pediatric triage nurse to see what I should do.
We made an appointment with our pediatrician for 12:15 p.m. The rule about respecting the nap was rescinded. Ivy was able to eat breakfast, but fell asleep again at 9:30 a.m. She was definitely not feeling well.
I gave her a snack and some milk as we made it to our appointment. We waited a little while in the waiting room. We became enamored with the large fish tank. Ivy tried to grab the colorful fish as they swam by. I named them for her—“That’s Dr. Octowaltz” and the quick one is called “D’artagnan.”
Our pediatrician gave us a diagnosis: acute ear infection. Ugh. I thought we just did this. It could be a number of scenarios, so we’re treating it as if it were a bacterial infection.
Ivy slept for much of the afternoon. I had an opportunity to get most of my paperwork done.
Ivy began feeling better in the evening. Maybe it was the meds. Maybe it was the fact that Holly came home. We’ve been exploring different varieties of fish for dinner. Fresh cod baked in chipotle seasoning was delicious. Dr. Octowaltz & D’artagnan’s kin had reached a fateful end.
