14/100: #parenthood

Jacket Tips. Bumble Jeans. Duck-a Duck-a Duck-a.

My daughter, Ivy, is creative with her words. Like most kids her age, she says things like “Mama” and “Dada.”

What I like more is her gibberish. When she says “Jacket Tips” it sounds more like a quick, whispered “jckatps.” “Bumble Jeans” comes out as “bmbljeeens.”

If she were to watch Star Wars today, she would see it differently than I do. Utinni. Yub nub—I hear her say words like these all the time.

Perhaps, in the first years of life, the language children speak is an evolved form of Huttese. Maybe she’d look up at the TV and know, without subtitles, that Uncle Owen got a raw deal and that Han shot first.

Any parent will tell you that taking care of an infant is hard work. The constant demand for one’s attention is exhausting.

What’s more difficult is taking care of a sick infant. Ivy has been ill all week. We are taxed. We were able to see a doctor yesterday. She has bronchiolitis and an ear infection. It should clear up soon.

I had planned to mix down last month’s house concert yesterday. That can wait. Child care has been a two person job lately. Hats off to all the single parents out there. I don’t know how you do it.

I look forward to the Saturdays when we’re chasing our Jawa around the house again. For now, she sleeps and dreams of better days.
